NC District Leadership Training

Alan and Carolyn Little

Members join GWRRA for a myriad of reasons: meeting others with similar interests in riding Gold Wings safely, chapter life, getting Wing World magazine, and the most universal reason… to have fun. So, how does Leadership Training fit into the mix? As one of the NC Certified Leadership Training Program Instructors put it, it is not only Leadership training, but also it is membership training.

Just as we all benefited from training to get the most out of riding our motorcycles, we all benefit from training to get the most out of our GWRRA membership. Attending Leadership Training will show you how to more fully enjoy your membership, while showing you how to have more fun in whatever you do within GWRRA. Every GWRRA member is eligible to attend every Leadership Training course. There are 47 different courses available, established within the below 3 Programs, and divided into 6 focus areas:

Member Training Program

Member Orientation Program
Life Skills Program
Chapter Life Program

Officer Training Program

Chapter Leadership Skills
Intermediate Leadership Skills
Advanced Leadership Skills

Horizons Program

The Horizons Program is a two-day event, held over a weekend. The Horizons Program crosses between Member and Officer training, with the main benefits being the opportunity to network and build close relationships with other persons interested in building successful GWRRA teams, and positively motivating others to have more fun.

Officer's Certification Program*

The Officer's Certification Program (OCP) was inaugurated in January, 2010, to properly train and certify GWRRA members to hold positions as GWRRA Operations Officers. GWRRA Operations Officers are defined as follows: Directors, Assistant Directors, and Rider Educators at the Chapter, District, Region, and National Levels, and Leadership Trainers at the District, Region, and National levels. In the case of couples holding these positions, only the member holding the office is required to attend; however, both members are strongly encouraged to attend because of the interactions of the couple in carrying out the responsibilities of the office.

The OCP is a day and a half of intensive training covering the specifics of the GWRRA Officers Handbook, as well as Internal Revenue Service information and requirements for a "Not-for-Profit" Corporation. Travel and motel expenses associated with attending this course are legitimate expenses that can be reimbursed from the member's Chapter, District, or Region treasury as applicable to the position for which the member is being certified. Once certified, all operations officers are required to maintain certification by attendance at the annual District or Region Operations meetings. If attendance at these meetings is not possible, they should contact the District or Region Training Officers (as applicable) to request copies of the annual OCP update information.

* OCP is required training for all GWRRA Operations Officers prior to stepping up to the office. Certain exceptions apply. Contact the District Training Officer for details.

There are three things common to all Leadership Training programs. These are:
1. You will have fun and meet people.
2. You will receive answers to questions, and
3. You will learn what other questions to ask.

The District provides Leadership Training to its members on scheduled and announced District Training Days in the West, Central, and East areas of NC. The District Leadership Team is also looking at other ways to provide training that better meet Chapter and member needs. The District Leadership Training Team has volunteer, certified instructors located throughout the NC District who are ready to work with you, our fellow member, to make Leadership Training, and more fun happen for you!
